Meet Dr Barbara

Dr Barbara

Dr Barbara works in a practice in Stockport, Greater Manchester. Here she talks about her work, her practice and the sorts of problems and issues she faces every day in her surgery.

Q1. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came into medicine.

This is my second career. I retrained in my thirties to study medicine because I wanted patient contact. In general practice you're not just looking at a leg or an arm, you're looking at the whole person and you're fitting all the pieces of the jigsaw together.


Q2. Tell us a little about your practice.

My four doctor practice is in Stockport and we've got 10,000 patients. We have a lot of elderly patients, a lot of patients with mental illness.


Q3. What sort of issues regularly come up in your practice?

Smoking related diseases are top of the list. Lung cancer. Mouth and throat cancer. Alcohol. Binge drinking. Elderly people with dementia.


Q4. Obesity is increasingly an issue for a lot of people. What can we do to tackle it?

Type 2 diabetes is increasing in the overweight, including teenagers. Schemes, like one for people with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 in Stockport, help, but really it all comes down to exercise. A good 20 minute walk three times a week is great.


Q5. What would be your top tips for a healthier lifestyle?

If you have peace of mind then you have everything. Exercise helps. Why not use the stairs at work rather than the lift. Cycle instead of using the car. Being with other people is good for you.

  • Take up a hobby, learn a new skill or try taking part in a sporting or group activity.
  • Use the stairs not the lift at work.
  • Eat fish at least twice a week.
  • Walk 20 minutes a day. Try to avoid using the car.
  • Reduce fat(approx 70g fat per day in average diet).
