About BBC Learning

What we spend

In line with an agreement reached with the BBC Trust, BBC Learning publishes information on how much it spends in the different areas of its formal learning online activity.

For 2009/10 (year ending 31 March 2010), expenditure was as follows:

Adults
Adult Skills £1.3m
Languages £0.5m
Media Literacy £0.2m
Ouch £0.4m
Total Adults £2.4m

5-19s
Bitesize £1.9m
Blast £1.2m
Teachers/Parents/Class Clips £1.6m
TV Support Projects £0.6m
Nations language assets
(spend for 2009/10 only)
£0.7m
Total 5-19s £6.0m

Cross-portfolio
Navigation £0.4m
Total Cross-portfolio £0.4m

This excludes those technical production costs which are covered centrally.

For 2010/11, following approval of the strategic approach by the Trust, our forecast expenditure is:

Adults £2.3m
5-19s £6.1m
Cross-portfolio £0.5m

This excludes those technical production costs which are covered centrally.

Within the 5-19s budget for 2010/11, spend is being reallocated from Nations language assets to Bitesize, Teachers/Parents including Class Clips, and Audio.

In June 2010, the BBC Trust approved a 'strategic assessment exercise' ('SAE') undertaken by BBC management to set out the future direction for the BBC's formal learning activity for the 5-19 age group. The actions recommended by management were accepted.
