The BBC has been committed to learning since its very first schools broadcast in 1924. That commitment is part of its core mission and drives much of its output. Over the years many people have started on a journey of discovery and learning as a result of something they have seen or heard on the BBC - something which has sparked their curiosity, led to a lifelong interest or helped develop a skill.
In September 2010 the BBC announced a new direction for its learning strategy. The underlying ambition is to inspire a life full of learning for everyone by exploiting the educative potential that exists across the full range of the BBC's output and activities, from News to Music, Natural History to the Arts, Sport to Drama.
Led and coordinated by the Learning department, the aim is to work with some of the BBC's best known programmes and brands to maximise their learning value and take advantage of the revolution in technology that is bringing, radio, television and the internet ever closer. Partnership with outside organisations is crucial to helping people discover opportunities for learning beyond the BBC - either online or through activity in the community.
Significant developments will be around major new series on science and history, as well as new daytime drama to help adults with basic skills and storylines in the EastEnders online spin-off, E20, supporting the personal, social and health education curriculum for teenagers.
Providing resources for students and teachers continues to be critical to the work of BBC Learning, with Bitesize the key offering for young people alongside sites for teachers, parents and adult learners. But increasingly we are drawing on the BBC's best known talent to enrich online content and provide a bridge to mainstream programmes.
